1940 Census Records for Living Children of N.T. & Fannie H. Dodge

I've recently found the surviving children of Nathaniel T. & Fannie H. (Stevens) Dodge in the 1940 U.S. Census. In preparing for this Census, I've gathered information on their whereabouts and where they lived through previous census records, local directories (Tacoma, San Francisco, Woodlake & Colorado Springs), Social Security Registrations (Dwight, Jim & Ann) & WWII Draft Cards (Dwight & David Nemetzky) over the past several years so that I could find their Census information from 1940 as soon as it was made available. Their surviving children are:

- Rachel Elizabeth (Dodge) Newitt (born Jan. 6, 1887), living in Tacoma, Washington;

- Frances Cleveland (Dodge) Nemetzky (born Nov. 22, 1888), living in San Francisco, California;

- Dwight Henry Dodge (born Mar. 17, 1891), living in Lemon Cove Judicial Township, California;

- James Robert Dodge (my great-grandfather, born Aug. 18, 1894), living in Rawlins, Wyoming; and

- Ann Hazel (Dodge) Graham (born Nov. 8, 1896), living in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Another surviving daughter, Clara Bell (Dodge) Morgan (born Mar. 28, 1884), was living in Wilkie, Saskatchewan, according to the Dominion of Canada - National Registration from 1940. I don't believe finding this particular piece of information is a coincidence; I feel that Clara wanted to be found and somehow be included in the information I would find on her siblings from the 1940 U.S. Census.

Another son, John Edward Dodge, passed away in Fairplay, Colorado on September 9, 1934, at the age of 52 years. He was born January 28, 1882. He never married and has no living descendants.

The two oldest children, Sherman Elwood Dodge (born April 21, 1875) & Alfred Hampton Dodge (born November 25, 1877), seem to have disappeared from history shortly after 1900. The only evidence I've found, apart from Sherman's brief marriage in 1900 and divorce in 1903 (publicized throughout the various Denver newspapers), is that Sherman & Alfred were living in California in 1919. That piece of information comes from their mother's obituary; yet there is no record or knowledge of where Sherman & Alfred would have lived or died. The only things left for Sherman and Alfred are fading memory and legend. I've never found them in ANY Census record after 1900 or any other available genealogical record. I feel it is highly improbable that these two would appear in the 1940 Census after vanishing from history 40 years earlier.

So with that, here is the 1940 U.S. Census.

James & Rachel Elizabeth (Dodge) Newitt; Tacoma, Washington. Their address is 311 S. 9th Street #296. Their rent was $32 per month. James had a high school education and Rachel had an 8th grade education. They moved to Tacoma in 1931 and in 1935 lived at 801 N. I Street #201. James was a Chemical Engineer working for a Chemical Manufacturer and worked 40 hours per week. He worked all of 1939 and earned $2,400.

David & Frances Cleveland (Dodge) Nemetzky; San Francisco, California. Their address was 59 Collins Street. They owned their home, which was valued at $5,000. Frances had lived there since before 1920, when she was married to her first husband, Thomas Fogalsang (he died in 1928). David & Frances both had a 10th grade education and worked as retailers in confectionery. Frances had opened Fogalsang's Pru-Nut Creams back in the mid 1920's. They worked 70 hours per week. They reported no income in 1939, but received income from sources other than salary or wages.

Dwight Henry & Ruth Lucille (Edgington) Dodge; Lemon Cove Judicial Township, California. This is part of rural Tulare County, outside the town of Woodlake. They lived on a farm and rented their residence for $10 per month. They lived in the same general location in 1935 but at a different residence. Dwight had an 8th grade education and Ruth had a 9th grade education. Dwight worked as a farm laborer and earned $1,080 during 1939. Dwight worked 54 hours per week. He not only worked but was also looking for work. Their mailing address was listed as Woodlake, California, according to voter registration lists (1924-1944), local directories (1925-1950) and Dwight's WWII Draft Card (1942) & SSN Application (1945).

James Robert & Alice Laura (Lemoine) Dodge; Rawlins, Wyoming. They lived on 405 Jackson Street and rented their home for $10 per month. They lived in Laramie, Wyoming in 1935 and lived at Windmill Ranch. They moved to Rawlins in 1936. Jim & Alice both had a 8th grade education. Jim had been unemployed for the past 26 weeks and earned $550 in 1939. They would move to 633 Davis Street shortly after the Census. Jim would later gain employment with the Union Pacific Railroad, earning $3,600 per year  and work there until his death in 1949.

George Earl & Ann Hazel (Dodge) Graham; Knob Hill, Colorado Springs, Colorado. They lived in a trailer on 2104 E. Platte Ave, just outside the Colorado Springs city limits and across the street from El Patio Lodge. According to Ann's SNN Application from 1942, their address was 2101 E. Platte Ave. They rented their trailer for $30 per month. They lived at 419 N. Franklin Street in Colorado Springs in 1935. George Earl Graham is listed as a Road Man working for the State Highway. He worked 48 hours per week and earned $1,500 during 1939. (He is also listed in the 1940 Census in Leadville, Colorado) Ann is listed as a Manager of a Cottage Camp (El Patio Lodge). In the directories from 1936 to 1942, Ann is listed as the manager of El Patio Lodge. Ann reported no income in 1939, but received income from sources other than salary or wages. They both had a high school education. They would move to Utah in the early 1940's and later to California during the late 1940's.

And here is Clara Bell (Dodge) Morgan's information from the Dominion of Canada - National Registration of 1940. This is a facsimile of the card; I have a copy of the original but it is hardly readable. Her address was Rural Route #3, Wilkie, in Wilkie, Saskatchewan. She was born in Colorado, U.S.A., March 28, 1886 (it should be 1884). Clara immigrated to Canada in 1911. At this time, Clara was in bad health and was receiving a pension because her son, William H. Morgan, was serving in the Canadian Army. Her occupation was  listed as a housewife. Clara passed away at Notre Dame Hospital in North Battleford, Saskatchewan on July 12, 1943. She died from heart trouble and also suffered a fall six weeks before she passed away.

Below are the enumeration district maps for the 1940 Census. I think it is interesting to visualize where everyone lived in relation to where they were enumerated. I have gone through the maps and outlined the districts where everyone lived. I also found descriptions of the boundaries of each enumeration district and included these with the enumeration district maps. (For those who have followed this blog, this is a new addition to this post as of January 2013).

 Enumeration District 21-84 - east of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Ann's address was 2104 E. Platte Ave., just outside the Colorado Springs City Limits.

 Enumeration District 4-1A - Rawlins, Wyoming. Jim and his family lived at 405 Jackson Street, between Hughes Street and Davis Street.

 Enumeration District 38-411 - San Francisco California. David & Frances lived at 59 Collins Street, just below the Laurel Hill Cemetery. Frances had lived there since before 1920, when she was married to Thomas Fogalsang.

 Enumeration District 42-21 - Tacoma, Washington. James & Rachel lived in an apartment at 311 S. 9th. They moved there during the 1930's. Rachel lived there until 1956, after her husband had passed away.

Enumeration District 54-22 - Lemon Cove Judicial Township, California. This enumeration district is composed of rural Tulare County. Dwight and Ruth lived in this area from the time they moved to Tulare County in the early 1920's until the time they left, which was around 1950.

I'm already getting ready for the 1950 U.S. Census (which won't be released until April of 2022). Here's what I have so far: Rachel will still be found in Tacoma at the same address. Frances will still be found in San Francisco, although at a different address (1234 39th Ave). Ann will likely be found in Susanville, California (she moved to California during the late 1940's; Jim Dodge's obituary  from December 1949 places her in Susanville) and Dwight may or may not still be in Tulare County, California. The directories indicate Dwight's mailing address was still in Woodlake as late as 1952, but we'll have to wait and see; everything I know about Dwight is based on what I've found out about him so far (Dwight left Colorado, and the family, in 1920). Jim, my great-grandfather, passed away on December 23, 1949, so it will be my great-grandmother Alice (Lemoine) Dodge and their two sons listed at 633 Davis Street in Rawlins, Wyoming the 1950 Census.
